The LinkedIn B2B Institute, working with the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, popularized the 95:5 rule: at any time, roughly 95% of B2B buyers are not in the market for a given product (Ehrenberg-Bass Institute). Its authors describe it as a rule of thumb rather than a precise measurement. It explains why reaching buyers before they are ready matters, and why buyer intent signals help you find the few who are in market now.

Statistics We Left Out
Some LinkedIn numbers appear on many statistics pages but don't trace back to a source we could find. We left them out:
Monthly active users. LinkedIn doesn't publish a monthly active user count, so figures quoted for it are estimates from other sites.
"LinkedIn engagement rate is X%" for all posts. Published averages divide by impressions or by followers, use different samples and often don't say which. Our study states its method.
Precise Premium subscriber counts. Microsoft has reported Premium revenue, not the number of subscribers.

By region, it lists more than 430 million in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, more than 410 million in Asia Pacific, more than 290 million in North America and more than 226 million in South and Central America. In the Content Marketing Institute's 2025 benchmark, 85% of B2B marketers said LinkedIn delivers the best value of any social platform, far ahead of Facebook at 28%, and 68% said they had increased their use of LinkedIn in the previous year.
Is LinkedIn good for B2B lead generation?
LinkedIn is the leading social channel for B2B leads. A 2017 LinkedIn analysis citing Oktopost found that 80% of B2B marketing leads from social media came through LinkedIn. What is a good engagement rate on LinkedIn?
In traxy's study of 1,965 B2B posts from 2026, the median post got 0.23 engagements per 100 followers, and the top quarter got 0.51 or more. Smaller profiles engage a larger share of their followers: the median was 0.64 for profiles under 10,000 followers and 0.09 for profiles over 100,000.
The Bottom Line
LinkedIn is large, growing and the main social channel for B2B marketing, but buyers ignore outreach that isn't relevant to them. The numbers point to the same approach: reach the right people with content worth their time, and contact the ones already showing interest. traxy tracks who engages with your posts, your competitors' posts and the creators your buyers follow, matches them against your ICP and sends them to Slack or your CRM.
