ChatGPT-attributed traffic fell sharply in several analytics datasets starting around October 9, 2026, and analysts traced it to links that stopped carrying the utm_source=chatgpt.com tag, Search Engine Journal reported on Thursday, October 15, 2026. Without the tag or a referrer, those visits showed up as Direct in Google Analytics 4.

The change followed the GPT-6 rollout, which reached paid plans on October 7 and free users on October 8. Inline links in answers lost the tag. Links in the Sources panel and shopping links kept it.

The numbers

  • Graphite: ChatGPT-attributed GA4 sessions fell 22% to 57% across its tracked sites from October 9.

  • Adobe data: on about 500 pages, ChatGPT visits fell by about 31,000 a day while Direct rose by about 26,000 a day.

  • Mobile: 95% of ChatGPT mobile visits to Graphite's sites relied on the tag alone.

  • Profound: answers with at least one tagged source link fell from about 98% on October 8 to 66% on October 14.

Cedric Huesler, a senior director of product management at Adobe, said OpenAI confirmed to him it was a bug, and that a fix began rolling out early on October 15. OpenAI has not addressed it publicly, and its release notes for October 1–15 don't mention link tracking. SEJ notes that several sources sell AI search tools.

Why it matters

31,000 visits a day left one column. 26,000 arrived in another. Most of the drop appears to be the label, not the buyers, though the data can't fully rule out some real loss.

That's the risk with referral data from a platform you don't control. It reports what the platform tags, and the tag can disappear in a product update. One week of missing tags can read as a 50% drop in a dashboard.

So annotate October 8–15 in your reports before anyone calls it a decline. And weight pipeline decisions on signals you own: who engaged, who replied, who booked. We covered how AI engines cite social content in last week's AI Overviews study, and why LinkedIn attribution breaks applies here too.
