What is contact enrichment? How email and phone lookup works for leads you found on LinkedIn — traxy blog

Contact enrichment is the step that adds contact details, such as a work email, a personal email or a phone number, to a lead you already know you want to reach. It starts from what you have, usually a name, a company and a LinkedIn profile, and matches that against data sources to find a reachable address. Enrichment doesn't find leads and doesn't send anything. It sits between deciding who to contact and contacting them. Lookups can come back empty, and a found email can still bounce, so check the status before you use a result. In traxy, you can look up email details for a qualified lead with eligible plan access, and phone details with the phone add-on or an entitlement that includes it. You can also turn on Auto-Enrich for new leads, and a lookup doesn't count the person as a new lead.

What does contact enrichment mean?

Enrichment means adding missing fields to a record. Contact enrichment adds the fields you need to reach a person:

  • Work email

  • Personal email

  • Phone number, often a mobile

  • Sometimes extra profile details, such as location or a current company domain

It's a narrower job than data enrichment in general, which also covers company details like headcount, revenue and tech stack. Our guide to CRM data enrichment covers the wider version.

How does email and phone lookup work?

Most enrichment tools combine three methods:

  1. Database matching. The tool checks the person's name and company against its own records of known contacts.

  2. Pattern finding. If the company uses a format such as first.last@company.com, the tool builds a likely address from the person's name and the company domain.

  3. Verification. The tool checks whether the address can receive mail without sending a message. Across the industry, verification tools usually label results as valid, risky or unknown. In traxy, check the status shown on the saved result before you use it.

Phone numbers are usually harder to find than emails, so expect fewer phone results.

Some domains accept mail for any address, which makes verification hard. Tools often label these "catch-all" or "risky". Treat them with care if you're sending at volume.

Why do some lookups come back empty?

A lookup is not a guarantee that a usable address exists. Common reasons for no result:

  • The person is at a small or new company with little public data.

  • They changed jobs recently, so the old address no longer works and the new one isn't known yet.

  • The company domain blocks verification.

  • The person isn't in the data sources being searched.

traxy's docs say this directly: check the saved result and its status before using it (contact details).

How do you check enrichment accuracy before you send?

A few habits prevent most bounce problems:

  • Use the best-verified emails for cold outreach. As a general industry practice, keep results flagged risky or catch-all (an address on a domain that accepts all mail) for a smaller, slower send, or skip them.

  • Test a sample. Before enriching thousands of leads, look up a small batch of people you can check by hand, such as existing customers.

  • Watch bounce rates on the first sends. A high bounce rate on a new list is a sign the data is stale.

  • Match the company. If the email domain doesn't match the person's current company on LinkedIn, find out why before using it.

Where does enrichment fit in outbound?

After you've decided who to contact, and before you contact them:

  1. Find the people. Search, lists, or signals such as LinkedIn engagement.

  2. Qualify them. Check fit against your ideal customer profile and the reason to reach out.

  3. Enrich. Add the contact details you need for the channels you'll use.

  4. Reach out. On LinkedIn, by email, or both.

Order matters for cost. Enriching every name you find, before qualifying, means paying to look up people you'll never contact. Enriching after qualification spends lookups on people who fit.

If you only reach out on LinkedIn, you may not need an email at all. If your sequence mixes LinkedIn and email steps, you'll need an email for each person on the email steps.

How does contact enrichment work in traxy?

traxy finds and qualifies leads from LinkedIn engagement first, then lets you enrich the ones you want to contact.

Look up one lead. Open the lead and review any saved work email, personal email or phone. If you need more, choose the lookup action for email, phone or both. Email lookup is included with eligible plan access. Phone lookup needs the phone add-on or an entitlement that includes it, and the app shows what your workspace can use.

Turn on Auto-Enrich. In Auto-Enrich settings, choose the contact types to look up for newly qualified leads. It doesn't go back and look up every historical lead.

Add details you already have. You can ask trax to save contact details you provide. You review the value before approving, it's saved as unverified, and later enrichment doesn't overwrite it.

Know what it costs in capacity. A lookup doesn't use lead capacity and doesn't make the person a new qualified lead (how qualification works).

Move the data. Choose the fields to include when you export leads or route them to another tool. Reading contact details through the API or MCP needs the right contact scope.

Enrichment doesn't send email. To reach out, connect a mailbox or LinkedIn account under Sender accounts and build a sequence, which you review and approve before anything sends (sequences).

Do you need a separate enrichment tool?

It depends on where your leads come from.

  • If you find leads in traxy, you can enrich them in the same place and use the details in a traxy campaign. You can also route them onward through Slack, a webhook, Clay, n8n or Zapier, or pull them with the REST API.

  • If you already pay for a contact database, you can route qualified leads from traxy to it through Zapier, a webhook, Clay or n8n, and enrich there.

  • If you start from a contact database, you have contact details already. What you're missing is the reason to contact each person. Our comparison of traxy and Lusha covers that split.

What about privacy rules?

Work emails and phone numbers are personal data in many places, including under the GDPR in the EU and the UK GDPR. Rules differ by country, so check what applies to you. This is general information, not legal advice. Common practice for B2B outreach is to:

  • Contact people only about something relevant to their job.

  • Give a clear way to opt out, and honor it.

  • Keep a suppression list. In traxy, use Do not contact for people who shouldn't receive further messages.

  • Don't store contact details you won't use.

FAQ

What is contact enrichment?

Adding contact details, such as a work email or phone number, to a lead you already have, by matching their name and company against data sources.

Is contact enrichment the same as lead generation?

No. Lead generation finds people to contact. Enrichment adds the details you need to reach people you've already chosen.

Why didn't enrichment find an email?

The person may be at a small or new company, may have changed jobs, or may not be in the data sources being searched. A lookup doesn't guarantee a result.

Does looking up contact details in traxy use lead capacity?

No. Lookups don't count the person again.

Does traxy send emails after enrichment?

No. You connect a mailbox, build a sequence, and approve it before anything sends.
