Salesforce Puts an AI Buying Agent on WhatsApp and SMS — Portal-Based B2B Procurement Is Ending
Salesforce shipped a major B2B Commerce update on July 21, 2026, centered on a native Buyer Agent that can handle product discovery, order management, and purchase completion through WhatsApp and SMS — without any involvement from a sales rep. The release was reported by Demand Gen Report and detailed by MarketScale.
The update bundles agentic commerce, intent-driven AI search, omni-channel quoting, mobile app publishing, and a headless developer framework into one suite built on the Agentforce platform.
Why This Matters
B2B buyers now use an average of ten channels across a single purchase, according to McKinsey & Company. That volume creates serious operational exposure: disconnected systems between digital storefronts, sales reps, ERP back ends, and messaging apps produce broken handoffs that stall deals.
Salesforce designed this suite to eliminate those gaps. The Buyer Agent functions as a 24/7 intelligent assistant that meets buyers on the channels they already use — rather than forcing them into a dedicated portal.
Buyers can search, configure, and purchase entirely through conversation. The agent delivers product recommendations with rich visuals rather than plain text links, replicating the white-glove experience enterprise buyers increasingly expect.
Intent-Driven Search Replaces Keyword Matching
The update also includes Agentic Commerce Search, built on technology Salesforce acquired from Cimulate. Instead of requiring exact part numbers or keyword matches, the new search engine understands buyer intent from natural language descriptions.
According to Salesforce's blog post, early customers are seeing double-digit improvements in both conversion and add-to-cart rates. The search can be deployed on both Salesforce-hosted and non-Salesforce storefronts.
The Bigger Picture: Agentic B2B Buying
This release is part of a broader trend: B2B purchasing is becoming fully agentic and multi-channel. The era where buyers logged into portals, navigated catalogs, and submitted purchase orders through forms is giving way to conversational, AI-assisted buying across WhatsApp, SMS, and AI platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini.
For B2B sales teams, this shift has a direct implication: if buyers are making purchasing decisions across ten different channels, you need visibility into engagement across all of them. The teams that track buyer intent signals across LinkedIn, email, website visits, and messaging platforms will have a decisive advantage over those still relying on a single-channel view.
LinkedIn, in particular, is where B2B decision-makers research vendors, evaluate competitors, and signal purchase intent — often before they ever visit your website. Understanding who's engaging with your content and how deeply they're interacting gives sales teams the context they need to meet buyers in the right channel at the right time.
The Salesforce update also marks a shift in how B2B companies think about AI and commerce. Vitin Mangtani, EVP & GM at Salesforce, noted that "referral traffic to brand sites will be hugely influenced by AI platforms — Gemini, ChatGPT, Anthropic — and social apps like Instagram and TikTok." But commerce itself, he argued, will remain on owned properties.
