Reddit Is Closing Its Public API and RSS Feeds — Signal Stacks Built on Rented Data Just Got a Deadline
Reddit announced on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 that it will stop supporting RSS feeds on November 13, citing large-scale scraping and automated abuse. For anyone using RSS outside a community they moderate, Reddit said "there is no replacement."
The API changes go further. Reddit will stop accepting new public API requests on October 31, start cutting off unregistered apps from January 12, and end public API access in March 2027. More than 14,000 apps and bots have already registered to move to its Developer Platform. Reddit is paying $1,000 to each eligible app that completes the move, from a $1 million fund. Access to Old Reddit is also narrowing to moderators and people who used it in the past six months.
Follow the money
Reddit's "other revenue" line, which mostly reflects AI data licensing, grew 24% year over year to $43 million in Q2 2026. Reddit has data deals with Google and OpenAI and is suing Anthropic and Perplexity. Once the public API closes, social listening services, research tools and AI assistants that pull Reddit data will need commercial agreements.
Why it matters
Many B2B signal stacks include third-party community monitoring: alerts when someone asks about your category, mentions a competitor, or complains about a tool you replace. Reddit just put an end date on the free version of that pipeline.
The lesson isn't specific to Reddit. Any signal you pull from a platform you don't control can be repriced or switched off with a few weeks' notice. The most durable signals come from your own audience: people engaging with your team's content, on channels where you're already participating. Those signals sit closer to the buyer, and they're harder to take away. For a map of where each signal type fits, see the modern B2B GTM stack and the complete guide to buyer intent signals.
If your team relies on Reddit monitoring, three dates matter: October 31 (no new API requests), November 13 (RSS ends) and January 12 (unregistered apps start losing access).
