**Someone viewed your LinkedIn profile. Should you message them, and what should you say? Message a viewer only if they fit the people you sell to and you have something useful to say about their work. Use the view to decide when to write. Don't make it the subject of the message. Openers like "I saw you viewed my profile" tell the reader you were watching and give them nothing to reply to. A view shows curiosity. It doesn't show that they want to buy, so send one short message, ask one question, and stop if they don't answer. If you also know the viewer liked or commented on your posts, or you contacted them recently, write about that instead.**

## What does a LinkedIn profile view tell you?

LinkedIn's Who's Viewed Your Profile list shows people who looked at your profile recently. How much you see depends on two things, according to [LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a568195) :

- **The viewer's setting.** A viewer shows up with their name and headline, as a description such as "Someone at Accenture", or as an anonymous "LinkedIn Member" in private mode.

- **Your plan and your own viewing setting.** A free (Basic) account shows the three most recent viewers from the last 90 days only when your own viewing option is set to show your name and headline. Premium Career and Premium Business can show viewer lists and insights for the past 365 days, subject to each viewer's privacy settings ([LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a568149) ).

Nobody can see the names of private-mode viewers, including Premium members. Only message people whose names LinkedIn shows you.

LinkedIn recorded a profile view, but that doesn't tell you how long the person spent or why they looked. People look at profiles after reading a post, after getting a cold email, while hiring, while checking out a competitor, or out of plain curiosity. That's why the view works as a timing signal and not as something to write about.

## Should you message someone who viewed your profile?

Look at three things first:

1. **Fit.** Do their role and company match the people you sell to? Recruiters, students, peers and competitors look at profiles too. Skip them.

2. **Other evidence.** Did they also like or comment on one of your posts, accept a connection request, or get an email from you recently? A view plus one of these is worth more than a view on its own.

3. **Timing.** Recent views are easier to act on. A view from weeks ago gives you little reason to write today.

If the person fits and you have something specific to say, send one message. If they fit but you have nothing specific, wait for another signal or engage with their posts first. If they don't fit, do nothing.

## Why avoid opening with "I saw you viewed my profile"?

Some sellers open with the view and say it works for them. LinkedIn's own sales blog collected examples like "I noticed that you stopped by my profile the other day. What brought you over?" ([LinkedIn Sales Solutions](https://www.linkedin.com/business/sales/blog/profile-best-practices/how-to-use-who-viewed-your-profile-in-linkedin-to-find-new-clients) ). That can work between existing connections who already know each other.

With people you don't know, mentioning the view has two problems:

- **It reads as surveillance.** The topic becomes your watching them, not their work.

- **It gives them nothing to reply to.** The view says nothing about their problem, so a message built around it has nothing to offer.

A useful test is whether the message would still make sense if they had never viewed your profile. If it would, the view only told you when to send it, which is how it should be used.

## Openers by situation

Here are illustrative opening lines for common situations, with what each one is based on. Change the details to fit each lead, and only mention facts you can verify.

Situation

What to write about

Example opener

Viewer fits, no other signal

Their role and a problem common to it

"Hi Maya, a lot of agency founders I talk to are rethinking how they find clients outside referrals. Is that on your list this quarter?"

Viewer also liked or commented on your post

The topic of that post

"Hi Daniel, thanks for the comment on my post about follow-up timing. How does your team decide when to send the second message?"

Viewer after your cold email

Something new that adds to your email

"Hi Priya, a short follow-up to my note last week. Here's the one-page checklist I mentioned, no reply needed if it's not relevant."

Existing first-degree connection

Catching up, as LinkedIn's examples suggest

"Hi Sam, it's been a while since we spoke. How's the new role going?"

Repeat viewer at a target account

Something specific about their company

"Hi Lena, I saw your team opened a second office in Austin. Are you hiring sales reps there as well?"

Keep each one short. Ask one question they can answer in a line. Don't attach a calendar link to the first message.

## How many follow-ups after a profile view?

For a view on its own, send one message. If they don't answer, you don't know why. A single profile view isn't permission for a five-step sequence.

If the person also engages with your posts or replies to something else, you have a reason to write again. Otherwise, let it go.

Always honour opt-outs. If someone asks you to stop, or is on a do-not-contact list, don't write to them again. In traxy, add their email address or LinkedIn profile identifier to [Do not contact](https://docs.traxy.ai/outreach/do-not-contact) to suppress outreach to that contact.

## How traxy helps you review lead evidence

For a lead already in traxy, compare its ICP match score with its signal label: Warm, Related, Activity or ICP match. The label describes signal strength, not a specific interaction. Open the lead's [Signals tab](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/signals) to inspect recorded observations and source links before mentioning post engagement in a message.

You can save filters as a [shared lead view](https://docs.traxy.ai/leads/saved-views) and use that view when you [create a campaign](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/create) . Test the plan, inspect the message preview, and review the audience and sender or destination before approving launch.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is it weird to message someone who viewed your LinkedIn profile?

It isn't weird if the message is about them and their work. It feels weird when the message is about the view itself. Write as if you had found them another way.

### Should I mention that they viewed my profile?

Usually not, with people you don't know. With existing connections you know, a light mention can be fine.

### How soon should I message a profile viewer?

Within a few days of the view, while there's a reason to write. Speed matters less than having something relevant to say.

### Can I identify someone who viewed my profile in private mode?

No. LinkedIn doesn't show the names of viewers who use private mode or private profile characteristics, even to Premium members.

### Is a profile view a sign someone wants to buy?

A view on its own shows curiosity. It's worth acting on when the viewer fits your customer profile and you have other evidence, such as engagement with your posts.
