**Four things people do on your own LinkedIn profile or page can point you to leads: viewing your profile, following you, connecting with you, and following your company page. LinkedIn shows you each of them in some form, but none means someone wants to buy. As a rule of thumb, ranked by how much they tell you: an accepted connection request they sent you says the most, then a new follower, then a profile view, then a company page follow. Treat each one as a reason to check fit, and act only on people who match the customers you sell to and where you have something specific to say.**

## What each activity tells you

These are LinkedIn activities, not labels in any sales tool. The ranking is a judgement call, not a LinkedIn rule.

What LinkedIn shows you

What it suggests

How much it tells you

Connection request they sent you

Their name and note, if any

They want an ongoing link with you

Most, especially with a note

New follower

Your followers, where LinkedIn lists them

They want to see your posts

Curiosity about you

Low to medium

Company page follow

Follower information in your page's admin view

Interest in your company's updates

Low, unless they fit closely

## Profile views

LinkedIn shows viewers according to their privacy setting, your plan and your own viewing setting ([LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a568195) ). A free (Basic) account shows the three most recent viewers from the last 90 days only when your own viewing option is set to show your name and headline. Premium Career and Premium Business can show viewer lists and insights for the past 365 days, subject to each viewer's privacy settings ([LinkedIn Help](https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a568149) ). LinkedIn doesn't show the names of private-mode viewers, even to Premium members. A view has no topic attached, so use it for timing and write about the person's work. See [what to send someone who viewed your profile](https://traxy.ai/blog/message-linkedin-profile-viewers) .

## New followers

A follow means someone wants your posts in their feed. That's a stronger hint than a view, because it's a choice to keep hearing from you. Followers who fit your customer profile are worth engaging with. Comment on their posts, or message them when one of your posts lines up with their work. A new follow isn't a request for a sales pitch.

## Connections

A connection request someone sends you is the strongest of the four. They chose to reach out, and a note often says why. If they fit, reply to the note, or ask what prompted the request. A request you sent that they accepted tells you less: they agreed, but didn't start it.

## Company page follows

A company page follow means someone wants your company's updates. Page followers are often employees, customers, candidates and partners, so check fit with care. One follow from a target account is a light hint about that account. Several from the same account are more worth noticing.

## How to act on LinkedIn activity

1. **Check fit first.** Role, company, industry and size should match the customers you sell to.

2. **Look for other evidence.** Did they also like or comment on your posts? Engagement with a topic gives you something to write about.

3. **Write about them, not the activity.** "Thanks for following me" is fine between people who know each other. With strangers, write about their work.

4. **Send one message and stop.** A follow or view doesn't give you permission for a long sequence.

5. **Respect opt-outs.** If someone asks you to stop, don't contact them again.

## Frequently asked questions

### Are new LinkedIn followers leads?

Some are. A follower is a lead only if they fit the customers you sell to.

### Should I message everyone who follows me?

No. Engage with those who fit, and message only when you have something relevant to say.

### Which LinkedIn activity is the strongest signal?

A connection request someone sends you, especially with a note, tells you the most of the four.

### Can I see who follows my company page?

Page admins get follower information in the page's admin view. How much LinkedIn lists about individual followers is up to LinkedIn, so check the admin view for your page.
