**Message a LinkedIn post engager about the topic of the post, not about the fact that they engaged. Check that the person fits your buyer first, wait a day or two, and match the opener to the kind of evidence you have. A comment gives you their own words. A like on someone else's post gives you only a topic. If all you have is fit, write a plain role-based introduction and leave the post out.**

Last checked: November 6, 2026.

lemlist published a guide on November 4 titled "How to prospect LinkedIn post engagers without sounding creepy." Its main advice is sound: reference the idea, the problem or the trend in the post, and skip "I saw you liked John's post." This article takes that one step further. The right opener depends on what the engagement was, and some engagers should get no message at all.

## Why "I saw you liked my post" lands badly

The line tells the person you watched their activity and turned it into a trigger. It also claims more than the evidence supports. A like can mean the person agreed, found it funny, knows the author, or tapped while scrolling. traxy's own guidance on using signals warns against "claiming an intent to purchase" from an interaction like that ([use signals in outreach](https://docs.traxy.ai/using-traxy/signal-cheat-sheet) ).

The better question to ask before writing is what you can truthfully say about this person based on what they did.

## Step 1. Decide whether the person should hear from you at all

Most engagers on a popular post are peers, job seekers, creators, existing customers or competitors. Filter first, then write.

Check four things:

1. **Role and seniority.** Does this person buy or influence the purchase?

2. **Company fit.** Size, industry and location you can sell to.

3. **Exclusions.** Current customers, open deals, competitors and anyone on your do not contact list.

4. **Evidence strength.** Is there a comment, a post of their own, or only a like?

In traxy, a person becomes a qualified lead only after an ICP match of at least 50% against your lead criteria, and you can filter higher ([how qualification works](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/qualification) ). Fit and signal are separate checks. A relevant post does not make someone a lead if they do not meet your criteria ([lead criteria](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/lead-criteria) ).

For people who should never get outreach, use **Do not contact**. To keep a whole company domain out of discovery, use the [Blocklist](https://docs.traxy.ai/workspace/blocklist) .

## Step 2. Read the signal label before choosing an angle

traxy labels each lead's signal so you know how much weight it can carry ([Signals](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/signals) ):

Label

What it means

How hard you can lean on it

Warm

A direct signal relevant to your offer

You can name the problem they raised

Related

Contextual evidence related to your offer

Use the topic as context

Activity

Observed activity with a weaker connection

Mention the topic lightly or not at all

ICP match

Fit without a recorded signal of the other types

Role-based introduction only

Open the lead's **Signals** tab and read the actual post or comment, with its date, ahead of referencing it. A missing signal does not prove the person has no interest. It means you have nothing to quote.

## Step 3. Match the opener to the evidence

Here are four openers, one per evidence type. Each is a template a person writes and edits. Replace the brackets with facts you checked.

### They left a relevant comment

You have their words, so respond to the specific point.

> Hi \[Name\], your point under \[Author\]'s post about \[problem\] stuck with me, especially \[their angle in your words\]. We work with \[ICP\] on \[outcome\]. How are you handling \[problem\] at \[Company\] right now?

Paraphrase their comment. Quoting it back word for word reads like a screenshot.

### They wrote a relevant post themselves

Connect your offer to the topic they chose to discuss.

> Hi \[Name\], read your post on \[topic\]. The part about \[specific point\] matches what we hear from \[ICP\]. We help with \[outcome\]. Happy to share how two teams like yours set it up, if useful.

Do not invent a current project or budget from the post.

### They liked someone else's post

You only know the topic interested them. Keep it general and do not mention the like.

> Hi \[Name\], a lot of \[role\]s at \[company type\] are rethinking \[topic\] this quarter. We help \[ICP\] with \[outcome\]. Is that on your list, or not a priority?

If the post was off-topic for your offer, skip the reference and treat them as a fit-only lead.

### Fit only, no usable signal

Write a factual introduction based on the role.

> Hi \[Name\], I work with \[role\]s at \[company type\] on \[outcome\]. Not sure it's relevant for \[Company\], so one question: is \[problem\] something your team owns?

traxy's guidance is direct here: avoid "inventing an interaction for personalization" ([use signals in outreach](https://docs.traxy.ai/using-traxy/signal-cheat-sheet) ).

## Step 4. Time it

lemlist suggests waiting a day or two after the engagement, since a message 90 seconds after a comment looks automated. A short delay keeps the topic fresh without making the person feel watched.

Late engagers matter too. Richard van der Blom's November 2026 newsletter reported that most of a LinkedIn post's reach now arrives after the first two hours, so engagers keep arriving for days. We covered what that means for pulling leads in [when to pull leads from a post](https://traxy.ai/blog/linkedin-post-reach-after-first-two-hours) .

In traxy, Tracking follows a managed window of the five most recent posts published after you add a profile. For an older post, or one from a profile you do not track, use **Track post** and confirm **Find leads** ([Tracking](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/tracking) ). You can also paste the post URL into trax and ask it to work with the post's audience ([work with trax](https://docs.traxy.ai/agent/overview) ).

## Step 5. Build a short follow-up, and stop on reply

A post engager usually gets a connection request with a short note, a message after acceptance, then an email if you have a verified address. In a traxy sequence, a wait can depend on an event such as connection acceptance, and replies, unsubscribe requests and hard bounces stop active outreach ([sequences](https://docs.traxy.ai/outreach/sequences) ).

A practical shape:

1. Connection request with no pitch, or a one-line note on the topic.

2. After acceptance, the opener from Step 3.

3. A few days later, one new piece of value: a short example, a checklist, a relevant post of yours.

4. An email that adds a different angle, only if you have the address.

5. Stop. If there is no response after that, the topic was not urgent for them.

Every later step should add something new. If step 3 needs a fact you do not have, shorten the sequence instead of inventing urgency. For a fuller walkthrough, see [following up on post engagement with LinkedIn and email](https://traxy.ai/blog/linkedin-and-email-sequence-after-post-engagement) .

## What this looks like in traxy

1. Track the profiles and posts your buyers engage with: your founder, competitors, influencers, investors, or custom relationships ([Tracking](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/tracking) , [who to track](https://traxy.ai/blog/who-to-track-on-linkedin-for-leads) ).

2. Review qualified leads by fit and signal label, and save the audience as a shared view.

3. Ask trax to prepare a campaign for that view with your offer and templates ([create a campaign](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/create) ).

4. Test it. A test prepares research and previews without sending anything.

5. Review the audience, sender, steps and delivery mode, then approve the launch yourself ([review and launch](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/review-and-launch) ).

You set the templates and approve every launch. traxy finds the leads, keeps the source beside each one and prepares the steps. That loop is what we call [signal-based outbound on autopilot](https://traxy.ai/signal-based-outbound) .

## Mistakes that make engager outreach feel creepy

- Naming the click: "saw you liked," "noticed you reacted."

- Quoting a comment back in full.

- Messaging minutes after the engagement.

- Treating a like on a viral post as interest in your product.

- Pitching in the connection note.

- Messaging competitors, current customers or people on your suppression list.

- Following up with fake urgency once the evidence runs out.

## FAQ

### Is it OK to message someone who liked my LinkedIn post?

Yes, if they fit your buyer and the message is about the topic. A like on your own post is a reasonable reason to start a conversation. Keep the note short and do not mention the like itself.

### Should I mention the post at all?

Mention the topic. If the person left a comment, you can respond to their point in your own words. If you only have a like on someone else's post, the topic is usually enough, or leave it out.

### How long should I wait before messaging a post engager?

A day or two is a sensible default. It keeps the topic fresh and avoids looking automated.

### Who should I skip?

Anyone below your fit bar, competitors, current customers, open deals and anyone on your do not contact list. Skipping a weak lead protects your sender reputation.

### Can traxy find engagers on a post I do not own?

Yes. Use **Track post** with the LinkedIn post URL, review the candidate scope and confirm **Find leads**. Candidate counts describe people to evaluate, not a promised number of qualified leads ([Tracking](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/tracking) ).

## Next step

Pick one recent post your buyers engaged with, run it through [traxy](https://traxy.ai/) , and write openers only for the leads that pass fit. Use the evidence table above to decide what each message can say.
