**Firmographic data describes a company: industry, size, revenue, location and funding. Technographic data describes the tools it runs. Engagement data describes what a named person did in public, such as commenting on a competitor's post or asking for a recommendation. Firmographic and technographic data tell you whether a company could buy. Engagement data tells you who there is paying attention to your topic now. Use the first two to define fit and the third to decide who to contact first and what to say.**

Last checked: November 6, 2026.

Common Room updated its guide to firmographic and technographic data on October 30. Its summary line is a good starting point: "Fit tells you which companies could buy. It tells you nothing about which ones are ready to." This article puts the third data type, engagement, next to the other two and shows how they work together in practice.

## The three data types side by side

Firmographic

Technographic

Engagement

Describes

The company

The company's tools

A named person's public activity

Examples

Industry, headcount, revenue, location, funding stage

CRM, marketing automation, data warehouse, a competitor's product

A comment on a competitor's post, a post about a problem, a request for recommendations

Answers

Could this company buy?

Does our product fit their setup? Are they using a rival?

Who here cares about this topic, and what did they say?

Misses

Timing and the person

Timing and the person

Company fit, unless you check it

How it ages

Slowly to moderately

Quickly; a post from this week beats one from last quarter

## What firmographic data tells you

Firmographic data is the company profile. Common Room lists industry, company size, annual revenue, geography, funding stage and ownership type, and growth indicators such as headcount trends and recent funding rounds.

Teams use it to define an ideal customer profile and to rule companies out. A five-person agency and a 2,000-person bank buy differently, even if a person at each liked the same post.

**What it misses:** which person to contact, and whether anything has changed that makes now a good time.

## What technographic data tells you

Technographic data lists the software a company uses. It answers practical questions: do they already use a competitor, do they run a platform you integrate with, did they add or drop a tool recently?

It is most useful for integration-led products and for competitive displacement. If you sell an add-on to a CRM, a company without that CRM is out.

**What it misses:** like firmographics, it describes the company and says little about the people or the timing. A company that has used the same CRM for five years has no reason to talk to you this week.

## What engagement data tells you

Engagement data comes from what named people do in public. On LinkedIn that includes:

- Commenting on or reacting to a competitor's, influencer's or partner's post

- Writing a post about a problem you solve

- Asking for a tool or vendor recommendation

- Engaging with your own team's posts or company page

It gives you a person, a date and a topic. A comment also gives you their own words.

**What it misses:** fit. An active person can work at a company you cannot sell to, or be a student, a competitor or a creator. Engagement also shows relevance, not readiness to buy. traxy's guidance says not to infer a person's budget, intent or dissatisfaction from a generic interaction ([outbound from qualified signals](https://docs.traxy.ai/using-traxy/outbound-to-signal-based-leads) ).

## How the three work together

Use them in this order:

1. **Firmographic and people criteria define who fits.** Industry, size, location, role and seniority.

2. **Technographic data narrows fit** when tools matter to your offer.

3. **Engagement data picks who to contact first** inside that fit, and gives the first message its topic.

A worked example. You sell a LinkedIn lead tool to B2B agencies.

- Firmographic: agencies with 10 to 100 employees in North America.

- Technographic: they use a CRM you can route leads into.

- Engagement: the agency founder commented this week on a post about losing clients after six months of LinkedIn content.

Without step 3, you have a list of agencies and no reason to write today. Without steps 1 and 2, you might write to a founder of a one-person shop who will never buy.

## How traxy uses fit and engagement

traxy keeps fit and engagement as separate checks.

**Fit.** In [Lead criteria](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/lead-criteria) , you set people criteria (roles, departments, seniority, locations) and company criteria (size, industry, revenue, funding, and keywords or niches). A person qualifies only with an ICP match of at least 50%, and filtering for a higher score narrows what you see without changing the threshold ([how qualification works](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/qualification) ).

**Engagement.** traxy finds people through Tracking of LinkedIn profiles, posts and companies, through [Social intent search](https://traxy.ai/social-intent-search) , and through discovery runs based on your targeting. Each lead carries a signal label:

Label

Meaning

Warm

A direct signal relevant to your offer

Related

Contextual evidence related to your offer

Activity

Observed activity with a weaker connection

ICP match

Fit information without a recorded signal of the other types

These labels describe signal strength and are separate from the ICP match score ([Signals](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/signals) ).

**Company context in research.** When you build a campaign, you can ask trax, the traxy agent, to research facts about each company. A test prepares the research without sending anything, so you can check what it found and decide what is worth mentioning ([create a campaign](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/create) ). The [signal-based outbound page](https://traxy.ai/signal-based-outbound) lists the kinds of company and people changes research looks for, including hiring, funding, new jobs and tech stack changes.

## Which data should drive the first line of a message?

The freshest evidence that the person can recognize:

Evidence you have

First line can mention

Avoid

Their comment on a relevant post

The point they made, in your words

Quoting it in full

Their own post

The topic they wrote about

Inventing a project or budget

A like on someone else's post

The topic, lightly

Saying you saw the like

Tech stack only

The integration or the tool category

Implying they are unhappy with it

Firmographics only

Their role and company type

Pretending you have a personal reason

This follows traxy's [signal guidance](https://docs.traxy.ai/using-traxy/signal-cheat-sheet) . For more examples, see [from a LinkedIn signal to a message you can back up](https://traxy.ai/blog/linkedin-signal-to-message) .

## Where intent data fits

Third-party intent data usually tells you that an account researched a topic, without naming the person. It sits between technographic and engagement data: company-level, with a timing hint. For the difference between account-level and contact-level data, see [types of B2B intent data](https://traxy.ai/blog/blog-types-of-b2b-intent-data-account-level-vs-contact-level) .

## FAQ

### What is the difference between firmographic and technographic data?

Firmographic data describes what a company is: industry, size, revenue, location, funding. Technographic data describes what it uses: its software and platforms.

### What is the difference between firmographic and demographic data?

Demographic data describes people, such as job title and location. Firmographic data describes the companies they work for. In B2B you need both, plus engagement to know who is paying attention.

### Is engagement data the same as intent data?

No. Most intent data is account-level and anonymous. Engagement data is tied to a named person and a specific post or comment you can open.

### Does traxy provide technographic data?

traxy is not a technographic data provider. It finds people from LinkedIn engagement and checks them against your lead criteria. Campaign research can look up company facts for the leads you choose.

### Where do I get contact details once I have a lead?

Request an email or phone lookup on the lead in traxy. A lookup does not guarantee a usable result, and it does not count the person as a new lead ([contact details](https://docs.traxy.ai/leads/contact-details) ).

## Next step

Write your fit criteria from firmographics first, then let engagement pick the first 20 people to contact. Start in [traxy](https://traxy.ai/) and compare those leads with your current list.
