**The best AI SDR for lead generation is the one whose leads you would contact yourself. Most AI SDR tools are judged on the emails they write, but the lead source decides results: a tool that sends to a database filter produces faster cold outreach, while a tool that finds people from public activity gives each message a reason. Before choosing, check four things: where leads come from, how fit is checked, what evidence you can see per lead, and who approves the message.**

## What an AI SDR does

Valley's guide to AI SDRs, updated November 2, 2026, describes the category as four functions in one subscription:

1. **Prospecting.** Pulling accounts and contacts that match your ICP.

2. **Research.** Role, company news, hiring, recent activity.

3. **Outreach.** Sending emails or LinkedIn messages and follow-ups.

4. **Reply handling.** Classifying responses, answering simple questions, booking meetings or routing replies to a person.

It also makes a point worth repeating: an AI SDR "automates execution, not judgment," and most disappointing deployments "fail on targeting, not writing."

That is why this guide puts lead generation first. If step 1 is weak, steps 2 to 4 send the wrong message to the wrong person faster.

## The three types of AI SDR tools

Valley groups the market into three types:

Examples named by Valley

Autonomous platforms

Sold as a digital worker that runs prospecting, outreach and replies by default

Artisan (approval can be switched on), 11x

Self-serve tools

## Where AI SDR leads come from

This is the question most comparison pages skip. There are four common lead sources:

1. **A contact database.** You set filters for title, company size and industry. Fast and broad. Everyone else using the same database can reach the same people.

2. **Your own list or CRM.** You bring the leads. The AI SDR researches and sends.

3. **Account-level intent or website visits.** You learn a company showed interest, and the tool guesses who to contact there.

4. **Public activity by a named person.** Someone commented on a competitor's post, asked for recommendations, posted about a problem, or engaged with an influencer your buyers follow.

Sources 1 and 2 give you fit with no reason to reach out now. Source 3 gives you a company with a reason, but not a person. Source 4 gives you a named person with an observable reason, and it still needs a fit check.

## How to evaluate an AI SDR for lead generation

Run every tool through these checks in a demo or a test run.

### 1\. Ask where each lead came from

Open five leads. For each, ask for the source and the date. If the answer is a database filter, you are evaluating a sending tool, not a lead generation tool.

### 2\. Check that fit is scored separately from the signal

A person can be active and wrong for you, or right for you and silent. In traxy, these are separate. A lead needs an ICP match of at least 50% against your criteria to qualify ([how qualification works](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/qualification) ), and a separate signal label (Warm, Related, Activity or ICP match) shows how strong the evidence is ([Signals](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/signals) ).

### 3\. Look at what the message is allowed to say

The best tools limit claims to what the evidence supports. A like on a post supports mentioning the topic. It does not support "saw you're evaluating vendors." traxy's guidance is explicit: do not infer budget, intent or dissatisfaction from a generic interaction ([outbound from qualified signals](https://docs.traxy.ai/using-traxy/outbound-to-signal-based-leads) ).

### 4\. Find out who approves, and when

Autonomous by default, approval by default, or configurable? Ask to see the approval screen.

### 5\. Test without sending

You should be able to see sample research and messages before anything goes out. A traxy campaign test prepares research and previews and sends nothing ([create a campaign](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/create) ).

### 6\. Check the stop rules

What stops outreach? In traxy, replies, unsubscribe requests and hard bounces stop active outreach, a lead can be in only one active sequence at a time, and **Do not contact** suppresses people you should not message ([sequences](https://docs.traxy.ai/outreach/sequences) , [do not contact](https://docs.traxy.ai/outreach/do-not-contact) ).

## Where traxy fits

traxy is built around the lead source. It finds people from public LinkedIn activity and your targeting, checks fit, and keeps the source beside each lead. Then it prepares outreach you approve. We call this [signal-based outbound on autopilot](https://traxy.ai/signal-based-outbound) : finding, researching and preparing run on their own, and a person approves every launch.

How it maps to the four AI SDR functions:

Function

In traxy

Prospecting

Discovery runs from your lead criteria and signals, Tracking of people, posts and companies, Social intent search ([discovery runs](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/agent-runs) , [Tracking](https://docs.traxy.ai/discovery/tracking) , [Social intent search](https://traxy.ai/social-intent-search) )

Research

Campaign research on the audience you choose, with facts you can check ([create a campaign](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/create) )

Outreach

LinkedIn and email sequences from your templates, approved at launch ([review and launch](https://docs.traxy.ai/campaigns/review-and-launch) )

Reply handling

Replies land in Inbox and stop the sequence for that lead ([Inbox](https://docs.traxy.ai/outreach/inbox) )

You talk to trax, the traxy agent, in plain language: "Find founders discussing their first sales hire," or "Create a campaign for the leads in our founder view." When trax proposes an action that needs approval, such as starting discovery, you review the card before choosing **Approve** ([work with trax](https://docs.traxy.ai/agent/overview) ).

**traxy is a good fit if** you want to see why each lead was chosen and approve launches yourself. **It is a weaker fit if** you want a tool that books meetings with no human review, or if you need leads from a contact database with no public activity behind them.

## A one-week test for any AI SDR

1. Write your buyer in one paragraph and give it to two tools.

2. Pull the first 25 leads from each.

3. Mark each lead: would you message this person yourself, yes or no?

4. For the yes leads, check whether the tool can show why they were chosen.

5. Approve one small campaign in each and compare replies from people who fit.

The tool with more yes leads and visible reasons usually wins, even if its emails look plainer in the demo.

## FAQ

### What is an AI SDR?

Software that automates some or all of a sales development rep's work: prospecting, research, outreach and early reply handling. Products differ mainly in how much runs without a person reviewing it and where the leads come from.

### Can an AI SDR replace a human SDR?

It can take over repetitive steps. Judgment about who fits, what to say and when to stop still needs a person, which is why many teams choose a tool with approval built in. For a deeper look, see [AI SDR vs manual prospecting](https://traxy.ai/blog/ai-sdr-vs-manual-prospecting) .

### Which AI SDR finds its own leads?

Tools that discover people from activity or signals, rather than only sending to a list you upload. traxy finds leads from LinkedIn engagement, tracked posts, profiles and companies, Social intent search and discovery runs based on your targeting.

### Does traxy write the messages?

You set the message templates. trax prepares the campaign steps for each lead from your templates and the lead's context, and you review and approve before launch.

## Next step

Give [traxy](https://traxy.ai/) your buyer description and look at the first qualified leads and their signals. If you would not message them, fix the criteria first and the copy second.
